Reaction to IVRA (Bier Block) treatment

After the first failed attempt at embolisation on my foot - the chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS) which had been slowly developing flared up (June last year). :sob:

I have just had the first round of treatment to try and help the CRPS using IVRA.

The pain has been even worse since that first round yesterday. I felt sick with the pain and it was a solid 8/10 - all on the top of the foot where the injections were.

Today I still feel rather sick and shabby pain on top of the foot (right now a 7/10 pain). The colour changes which are also part of CRPS are happening faster now, compare with before.

But it hasn’t been 24 hours yet since the first treatment.

Question - should I call the pain clinic and ask for help, or wait a day? Because I have no idea what to do or if it will settle - all I know is I am worse off now then when I went in for this treatment.

Also slightly concerned as one injection site looks normal but the other is much redder and has a lump underneath. I know AVM have clotting risks and I am worried about that lump. Should I speak to the pain clinic or the AVM consultant about that? Or just wait and see?

Thanks!

I think the only advice to give is that if you’re ever concerned, ring the doc.

I had a lump at my catheter injection site following one of my angiograms and went to the out of hours service at the hospital to get checked out. The doctor was perfectly understanding of my concern and in my case was able to suggest I did have a blood clot (presumably outside the artery) that would be reabsorbed over time and no cause for concern. As he forecast, it went away over time.

I braved it and spoke to both the pain clinic specialist nurse and a general Doctor.

They both think the lump should go away by itself and aren’t too concerned (although I have been prescribed some cream to help). Either a small clot (unlikely to move or be dangerous because of where it is) or just bruising because of the injection.

In terms of the pain - apparently because the foot has so little fat in it and lots of nerves it hurts a lot when anything is done to it.

Both reassuring points (although wish the pain would just go away). Thank you for being here (and for sharing your own experience)!!

It’s good that you asked the question. Voicing it helped it move along. Well done.
