Looking for information on use of Avastin for my 5 yr. old son w/multiple avm's

If you have any information on the use of Avastin, please let me know. I've been told that my insurance company won't cover it, as it's used in cancer patients and my son does not have cancer. Also, I've read that it has bad side effects? Any info. would be appreciated. The dr. wants to try Avastin. My son has had 15 brain embolizations and he keeps growing more avm's. Time to try a new route, according to the dr. By the grace of God, my son is overall doing well. We believe in prayer! He has never had seizures and is developing normally. You'd never know by looking at him what he has gone through. Thanks!

Kim, here is a summary of the side effects of Avastin: http://www.avastin.com/patient/overview/side-effects/index.html

I think you must get another opinion before beginning Avastin on a child so young. There are some good suggestions for doctors here: http://www.avmsurvivors.org/group/parentsofavm/forum/topics/i-am-a-...

I'm so glad that otherwise your son is well and seizure-free.

Hi Kim,

I don't know how expensive Avastin is, but if it very much, and if it is prescribed, I'd contact the mfger and see if they would offer it to you for free. I know home schooling, you don't have any free time, but it might be worth a letter and phone call to get the RX free.

I'm glad you have religion to help you through this. Having bad stuff happen to a child is gut wrenching................. God Bless all of you.

Hope this helps.
