Craniotomy vs Gamma Knife

My doctor’s said “live your life”!

If two specialists have told you craniotomy that would be a no brainer for me…

Although I know its easier said than done.

I had the choice between the two an actually my surgeon said either is a great option for me because mine is in a good place for either. I choose surgery as i didn’t want gamma to choose my fate- i wanted to be in control.

I am now 2 weeks post op- AVM free  no deficits a part from fatigue but that’s part of the recovery, i was up walking the following day… these surgeons are amazing at what they do- i was confident in mine an didn’t feel I needed a second opinion.

Once u have made your decison you will feel like a weight has been lifted. I dont believe in the “make sure your 100percent with your decison” as u will be there forever - as let’s face it- both options suck!!! But go with your heart an don’t look back … good luck xxxxxxxx

Hi,i have the choice of surgery, for unruptured fistula at back of head,i had 3embolizations last year, but this tiny one can only be done this way,or i can leave it,and hope i never have a stroke,it’s booked for 19th this month, driving and blindness worry me most? Could you drive and did they cut your jaw? I have heard they do this sometimes. I have been waiting to be 100percent but as you say this will never happen,x

Hey

I’m so sorry I have just seen this!

Yes the downside is you do you lose your license for six months I have three kids are in the summer holidays living in the village is going to be a nightmare- But still looking at it the other side I’m here to see there future so it’s all worth it!
He didn’t say look at my job actually I think you did as it was sore for about two week after- Completely fine again now…

Have you made your decision? Xx

Hi Natalie,
I am having a craniotomy next Thursday for my AVM. Was there a particular reason you couldn’t drive for 6 months or is that standard for having a craniotomy? My dr didn’t mention that. :grimacing:

Hey!
That’s amazing - good luck for your surgery & I wish you a speedy recovery!

It’s the guidelines by the DVLA after a craniotomy - that’s bad he didn’t tell you that important fact haha … I’ve never had a seizure or anything xxx

@Stellgma

Natalie & I are in the UK and rules for driving are quite prescribed. It may well be different in the US where there are fewer people per square mile. Nat is giving you the UK rules.

Cheers,

Richard

Oh yes sorry I shouldn’t have assumed you are in the UK xx
