Hello everyone,
I hope this new year is starting off well for everyone. Is anyone familiar with radiation to get rid of an avm? I had an appointment this past week with my neurosurgeon and have another appointment in April. At that time they are going to run tests and possibly make me a candidate for radiation to get rid of my avm. If anyone has any info I'd greatly appreciate it.
God bless
Jessica

I had a AVM below the nasal fold of my nose in 1998. The ENT doctor who did the CT scan told me he would love nothing more than to surgically remove the AVM, but that I wouldn't like the cosmetic results. He suggested I try radiation first. The radiologists had success with cerebral AVM's, but had never tried to treat one that was not brain related. You have to understand that this was 12 years ago and I don't even know what sort of radiaton was used. I had five treatments in one week and my AVM shrunk in about 6 months. This was at the University of Washington in Seattle. I had an AVM in my left jaw that was surgically resected in October 1987. The dfference between the two options are striking. I recommend trying anything to avoid surgery. I know are situations are different, but I hope this helps some.

My Radioloogist just suggested my son have a consult with a radiation dr too. What did the neuroisurgeon say about radiation? I called a gamma knife specialist and they can only do brain AVMS. Any help would be appeciated. thanks, Ilene

Why do they want to give you radiation for irregular blood vessels and arteries that are a tangled mess? I thought radiation was for bad cells, I'd ask because with radiation it kills all your cells good and bad, and makes you sick and weak. And I know people that have had radiation. Bless You; keep asking questions

They are talking about gamma knife. I had gamma knife in Feb 07 and avm gone now. There is some info under More>Links (above). It's a painless procedure but takes at least 2 years to work.
