Pregnant 5months after AVM Stroke and removal?

Have just been faced with and overwhelming issue with my fiancé "Kate". She had a ruptured AVM October 22nd and sense has had it removed and is recovering with some speech and right side weakness. She is now one month pregnant which is a wonderful yet scary future for us. Over the last year and a half before the onset of her AVM she couldn’t conceive without medication, now we are faced with the question can she so soon after have a child and with all the medications is there a risk of birth defects? We where cleared by her Neuro surgeon to resume normal sexual activity but never thought she would be able to become pregnant without the use of fertility drugs that she used to conceive in the past.

Congrats and good luck. I do not know what meds she is on, but I was on every darn pain killer known to man and had MRI's, cat scans (I think that is what it was called), and a variety of other tests, and my son is great! There is always hope. Like Trish said though, definitely talk with an OB, though. You may want to actually refer the OB and her neurologist to one another. They may have different ideas of what she needs to be taking, and wires could get crossed. They definitely need to be on the same page to make sure they have the same goal, which should be to get her and your baby through this as safely as possible.

Congratulations to you and Kate! I would say go see her OB/GYN as soon as possible to rule out potential risks with whatever medication she is taking. She may have to switch some while she's pregnant. Having a baby is exciting yet I understand the fear. Don't worry, you both can do this!
