My boyfriend (age 27) suffered a stroke, due to an AVM rupture in the brain stem in July 2011. He has undergone Cyber Knife surgery in April 2012. He has numbness in one side of his body, difficulty with his memory, severe depression/anxiety/perseveration, and he is very unstable. He can use a walker to get around (still unstable, and needs assistance). He says he always feels "drunk."
I was wondering if there are any similar stories, or anyone who can help give ideas of what the future has in store for us. Any kind of help, as far as people with an AVM in the brain stem, or anyone who has undergone cyber knife surgery who can help with long-term side effects, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Hi Milissa,
It's frustrating and scary being in your positions.
The brain takes a very long time to heal, especially in the deep, eloquent locations. While we're all different in our recoveries, it can take mos. - years to improve.
Is he getting any rehab?
Is he on medications that may contribute to his feeling "drunk"?
And are his doctors aware of this?
My 4th surgery of 3/9/10 was in the right thalamus (near brainstem) & I required extensive neuro rehab (in-patient & out-patient) to relearn to walk & adapt to many changes.
Recovery improvements often come in 'baby steps', so never give up on the hope of improvement!
Best wishes.
