Another embolism, a big move, and a graduation

Posted on November 11, 2011 at 6:31pm 1 Comment

So, I defended my dissertation, and while I'm still finishing my thesis, I have made the half country move to Texas. While I am ecstatic to be with my husband in the same house for the 1st time in 3 years (it's kind of a long story), the move was hard, and starting over with new doctors, new everything I'm sure will be difficult. It doesn't help that my family is now 1400 miles away. Guess Maryland will always be home.

My embolization before I left was performed by Dr. Ziv Haskal at…

Another Birthday, another victory

My birthday is today.

I won't bore you with the details that I'm old now. But, I will bore you with the details that I've been dealing with a high output periphery AVM for close to 27 years. I wake up in pain everyday, take a bit too much pain medication.

But I wake up everyday. I'm defending my PhD dissertation in two weeks. It's funny, I'll be a doctor then. How cool is that?

Another birthday is another victory. Another battle fought in this war against… Continue

Procedure done, more set for the future

All-

Just wanted to send a quick note and thanks for everyone's well wishes for my procedure last week. I did pretty good! Dr. Haskal at the University of Maryland seems like he knows what's what, and used a thing called Onyx in my pelvis and parts of my upper right leg. More is scheduled for late August just in time for my move to TX and hopefully my PhD graduation!!

I gotta tell you if there's anything I can't say how happy I am that I stuck to my guns about finding…

Hi Melinda. I joined up with AVMSurvivors.org yesterday. I am my daughter's advocate at this time because she can't really sit very well to email. She is also in a place where she is timid about talking about her AVM experiences with others at this point. May I share her story with you as it sounds like you have a similar situation? My daughter and her husband and 3 babies (twins 3, and a 19 mo old live in Wylie, TX. You just moved to TX recently from MD? She found out she had a main AVM in her right buttock after she delivered the twins - don't know whether the hormones or the weight of the twins exascerbated her congenital AVM. Since that time she has had 3 surgeries in Plano by a Vascular Surgeon at the Baylor Heart Hospital where they placed coils and plugs and 3 surgeries by a top Interventional Radiologist in NYC at Lenox Hill Hospital. They have been spaced about 3 months apart and each time she has really gotten worse instead of better. Are you going to have to return intermittently to MD? It must have been hard to leave your doctor you trusted. My daughter has been forced to leave the NYC surgeon who has been doing AVM surgeries for 20 years or so because of her BCBS insurance - they don't participate. They've given her breaks but say no more. Sooo, she has an appt with a Radiologist, Dr. Rivera I believe from Plano, TX but there is no guarantees he will do anything for her. We have contemplated going to Mayo in Rochester, MN. We are not sure what to do as the glue embolizations Dr. Rosen did in NYC don't seem to make a difference- so not sure if Radiation is the next option.
Sorry this is so long. Would you like to correspond? Thank you for listening.

Please don't feel like you have to come...only if you want to. It'll be an opportunity to see other AVMers face-to-face and sometimes that can help a lot. I hope you're doing well. Take care!

Melinda have you looked at Dallas or San Antonio? The founder of this website went to Dallas (IT Southwestern I believe) and said some marvelous things about the doctors there. His name is Ben and his page has some doctor info I'm sure. He's very busy and might not answer you directly but he's way nice and does his best. Good luck and if you have any questions, let me know. Welcome to Texas!

Melinda, I'm still reading and researching. I came across the name Sally Mitchell. Did she treat you at JH? If so, what was your experience there?

Thanks again for the info. You're not causing any trouble :) I have looked at Dr. Hull's web page before; he looks very experienced. My question is this . . . it seems that so many more doctors are experienced in brain AVMs. Will a doctor who has primarily worked with brain AVMs know what's best for an AVM in the knee/leg? As I've been learning and researching, I've tended to rule out doctors who work with brain patients. But I'm not sure if my thinking is right in this area.

Melinda,
Thank you so much for all of your comments today. Yes, I am much closer to Richmond than Washington D. C. or Maryland, but Washington D. C. or Maryland are a lot closer than Denver, CO! All of the info you gave was very helpful. My son's initials are JD, by the way; I'm his mom. I read all of your comments to my husband tonight and we talked through it all. Some of my nagging concerns are some of the exact things you mentioned. We definitely have a lot to think/pray about. Thank you for taking the time to help. I will let you know if we have more questions, and I'll keep you up to date.
Thank you!

Yes the area of the mass is very warm. Still waiting for complete diagnosis but after several tests the doctors have come back to "atypical AVM" now waiting for a pathologist in Boston to offer his opinion on the pathology slides...the good news is that they said it was not cancer, but won't be able to figure out treatment options until they hear from the Boston pathologist...the swelling wen down tremendously after they biopsied it...they said there was a lot of blood clot in there which I think they say is not typical of AVM? I find this site to be very helpful and I am very glad that it exists! Thank you to everyone for all of the information and support.
