Hi Everyone!
I had Gamma Knife 7 months ago for my unruptured AVM treatment. Last week, I experienced the worst headache ever, so I went to the ER so they could rule-out a bleed. They did a CT scan which was clear. Then, the doctor said the only way to be absolutely sure that there was no bleed, was to do a spinal tap (lumbar puncture).
I did not have any problems during the procedure and I lay flat for 1 hour after. However, the next day is when the pain started. I have lots of head pain and pressure when standing or being upright, also with nausea. I also have pain in my hips and lower back (but not at the puncture site) that comes and goes. My ears also feel clogged and I have ringing in them.
So, my question is- has anyone had a spinal tap that resulted in these or similar symptoms? If so, how long did they take to go away? Do you think this means my spinal fluid is leaking? Also, I have read that the treatment to patch the leak is called a Blood Patch, but I have read about some bad side effects of this. Has anyone had a good/bad experience with a blood patch treatment?
Thank you for any and all responses! I am getting worried about what I should do with this persistent new pain.

I too went to er to rule out a rupturing avm when they said to do a spinal tap for the same reason as yours. I too laid flat for an hour. during the procedure nothing went wrong as far as I knew. I fell asleep after my procedure. when I woke up i could not lift my legs off the bed and I had a really bad headache that came the next day that was worse than when i went to the hospital. I spent one week in the hospital because i was unable to walk after the procedure. my hips hurt sooooo bad after the procedure. I had never had any problems with my hips and things before besides my headaches. My lower back never hurt but my hips were so bad i was in physical therapy for a month afterwards and only reason it didnt continue after that is because of my lack of insurance issues. but i suggest you ask your neurosurgeon or neurologist about it. I was told by my surgeon that when they do the surgery (craniotomy) for removal of avm that they put in a drainage tube for csf fluid in the back to lessen the pressure in the brain to allow for the most optimal surgery technique. He said its like having a slow drawn out lumbar puncture. when i had my tap done back in may they think that the fluid release also released pressure in the brain causing my brain to shift onto nerves going to the hips. so I would get a second and third opinion. because they blamed my hip pain and whatnot on me having a conversion disorder. it was something that had never come up before and its a mental disorder. needless to say its an erroneous diagnosis and they finally see that. but yeah 2nd and 3rd opinions are definitely recommended.
