Hi Ben,
Even if you see other people logged in at the same time as you, it does not always mean that they are actually active on the site at the time. But...If you write something in the chat room :) ...there will be a *pling* sound (unless the volume is turned of your PC) ...that is an invite for a chat :) Alternatively you can choose a private chat, then you click on the person you want to chat with under "private chat" :)
I try my best to reply whenever I see someone writing in the chat room, if I hear the *pling*. One possible reason why people do not get a response might be because we are members all over the world. I often see messages from Australia when I log in, but then their day has ended and turned into night...
Also it is a bit confusing, since the time in the chat room is completely different from my "real time" here in Norway, then I do not have a clue when it was written and often I miss out because of that.
That said, it has been very quiet in the chat space for a while now, but it has not always been so.
Well again, it all depends on us users. Next time you see me in the room, please *poke me* if you feel like chatting! ...but it might be in the middle of the night in Oslo ;)
Another thing we can do if we feel like chatting, is to simply add a smiley when we log in to let people know we are here, ready for chatting :)
I think the chat room is a really good tool to use especially in situations where you might have questions or worry you need to share immediately! I know that has helped many people in here before.
Thank you for adding this discussion, it might make members that otherwise did not know, aware of the chat room and its possibilities!

Permalink Reply by Ben Morrell on February 2, 2011 at 8:00pm Thanks Hanne. That does explain some things to me. I often check on the chatroom but, I seem to miss people. And of course, I can see who's on line but, I didn't know if there was a way to hold of them or such. I never knew about a private chat. Huh, I learn something new every day. :)
Louisa, me too. At least with us on the same time frame, we should be able to catch each other.
Hanne, Do you know the time difference between the USA and where you live?
