OK...so my crainiotomy was four months ago, not three. And now I understand, from my optomotrist, not my neuro-opthomologist, that my 2x vision is caused by a 4th nerve palsy. Which is aparantlly what they tell you when they don't know. They also tell you to wait.

I'm used to strapping myself into a jet with two enginest, each with about 8,000lbs of thrust. Everywhere I go, I go fast. About 500mph. Telling me to wait is like telling a fish not to swim. Not very likely.

Anyone know anything about this 4th nerve palsy crap.

Greg- I have a 6th nerve palsy. But it to causes double vision. Now I am 11 years out and still experience 2x vision to some degree, however on a daily basis I am able to keep it in check. My advice to you is to find: (your pick) 1. Neuro OPTOMOTRIST
2. Behavioral OPTOMOTRIST
Or 3.Developmental OPTOMETRIST. And one of these who practices vision therapy.

Vision therapy will help get your eyes in line a lot quicker than if you wait on it. Be proactive. Remember after a bleed we are all trying to find our new "normal".

Well wishes on a jet propelled recovery.
Also nerve palsy means that at some point the nerve is paralyzed, means that the muscles that it sends electrical Impulses to do not function properly due to lack of stimulation or communication.

Hi Kellie,

Thanks for the advice. According to my neuro-surgon, and my neuro-opthomologist, my 4th nerve palsy was supposed to be temporary. No operation is supposed to be done in case it self-corrects.

What I have read about 4th nerve palsy is it can be temporary as a result of any brain trauma. My surgery for example.

However, you could be right. This could, and seems to be permament. If so, sucks for me. At 42, not 11. Much more difficult to find a job with decent pay and benefits. Even if everything works out OK.

In the meantime, I will look into 2nd opinions. I don't know so much about optometrists, I do eye exercises already. From business cards, tennis balls, to computer games.

Anyway, I wish you good health, a long life and all the success in the world.

Greg- I am 11 yrs out from surgery. But some people tell me I look pretty young, that may come in handy someday!

Nothing about the nerve! Bt as far asthe optomotrist mine told m my eyes were fine he said the visual problems were all in my Occipital lobe which gets my new favorite quote! "Its all in my head!" We do a lot of visual teapy! Which even included a driving simulator test! Yep! driving a car! No points for hitting pedestrians! Ok, enough silliness!

I see. Thought you were 11. Never mind.

My daughter had a craniotomy for a cerebellar avm in June. She came out of the surgery with double vision. probably damage to the 4 th cranial nerve during surgery. Initially she would tuck her chin to her chest then she started to tilt it to the right which seemed to correct it. I took her to a neuro
opthslmologist. We tried a prism lens. For
her that did not work. It took over 6 months and gradually it is correcting. Now she only has double vision when she tilts to the opposite side. I was able to tell if she had double vision because her eye would deviate up. Are your eyes moving totally in synch? Have they mentioned trying prism lenses? We were told it could take up to 2 years for the damage to heal.... Good luck. And find a neuro opthslmologist who will work with you!

Hi Rachel's Mom,

It seems I only have the 2x vision due to my right eye. I am wearing prisms but they don't seem to help much. I will see my neuro-opthomlogist in a couple weeks and hope to get more info from him. Again, everyone has been telling me to wait on surgery, even the Dr. I was looking for a second opinion, as it may correct on it's own. Regarding another question. Not sure about eyes moving in sync. MY right eye seems to want to look at my nose. Hence, 2x vision.

If surgery is done too early, (don't know when that is)then would have to redo surgery to correct again.

Thanks for reply.

I also agree with the person who posted about the behavioral optometrist- I know that there was one locally I was going to use, but she started to get better. I have heard truly amazing things about people who were helped by this discipline. It is easy to tell you to wait when we are not the ones experiencing the symptoms, but it is true that you need to give yourself time to heal.

Good luck!

Also Greg look up the NORA website. It will give you tons of info on vision.

Hi Kellie,

Thanks again. I see my new neuro-optomotrist on wendsday. Hopefully good news. Need new glasses too an he deals a lot with 2x vision. Still have hope that dr's are right and this nerve will self-correct. If not, always surgery, I guess. Hard to live with this for just 4 months.

Be well.
